Gasteinertal / Gastein Valley / Pongau / Salzburg / Austria. Finally. My husband and I, we did it again – after a long long time – we spend a weekend trip in austria. Our last vacay in our home country is around three years ago. Mostly of the time we only did day trips in austria and spend our longer weekends abroad. Nevertheless to our fourth wedding anniversary we went to salzburg, to the gastein valley. It’s such a beautiful place with three different communities flanked by the hohe tauern mountains. The scenery is really impressive and also the mountain view is breathtaking. We definitely enjoyed our days there. It’s a perfect combination of culture, sport and spa with austrian tradition and style. Here you can find during your morning walk farmers at their work, like handmade cut the grass with a scythe. That’s only one example from a lot.
The gastein valley offers so much outdoor fun for sport lovers, no matter if summer or winter. Everybody will find the right things, from hiking, biking, swimming and in winter naturally skiing. Some activities you can do the whole year like flying waters, paragliding or trail running. As you can see, nearly everybody will find something to do 😉 In this valley you find the three cities bad gastein, dorfgastein and bad hofgastein. Each of them has its own identiy and sometimes you’ll find modern life, where you didn’t expect it and on the other hand you’ll find close to them old folk traditions. You’ll also find the world famous hot springs, the astonishing healing gallery and the stunning alpine landscape.
So but you’re truly interested, what we did a summer weekend there, right 🙂 We stayed in Dorfgastein in the hotel bergparadies. We really like the stay there, the rooms are super modern and perfect for a weekend. For the breakfast you’ve to go to the town, it’s around 500m away and I really looved the walk. You went through the beautiful old tradition village, you can see the beautiful houses and also the old building style, which I absolutely like. This hotel is definitely an insider tip, because the rooms and the food is super yummy and in your stay is also the free admission to the thermal spa and sauna area of the alpentherme gastein included and also a lot of other free services.
Therefore we spent one day in the mountains, we made a “little” hiking tour. We started in Bad Hofgastein and went with the lift to the top of the mountain, called the Schlossalm. Arrived on the top, we went further to the summit cross, where we stopped and enjoyed the really breathtaking panorama. Then we decided to move to the valley by foot, so we did a little hiking tour down. All in all, 14,30 kilometres and four hours (with a break in one of the beautiful Almgasthof) later we arrived again in Bad Hofgastein. After this adventure, we grant us a spa timeout. On the second day, we also spent the whole day in the spa area of the alpentherme. It’s really great there with a few outdoor pools and also a little natural outdoor pool.
Definitely an insider tip is the beautiful waterfall in Bad Gastein. It’s also the motive of many painters and poets and simply a place with a high energy. The vaporisation of ionized air has a very positive and also pleasant effect on the general health. The waterfall drop of 341 meters in three levels and there’s also a waterfall path in the summer. This was absolutely a highlight of me and it’s really stunning to watch.
